the pocketscan reader is an ideal tool for the at home DIY mechanic. although some parts stores offer a "free" code read, they immediately offfer the 90$ diagnostic service. with my own code reader, the included dvd, and the internet, i find i can save hundreds of $ by doing the work myself. it's much more convenient as well. you don't have to wait while the service "tech" has to pry himself away from the counter to read your codes which takes about a minute. literally. a great tool to have. thanks amazon!!! Actron CP9125 Works great.
 I purchased this to read codes on my 2004 GMC Yukon XL. Was able to quickly pull codes and determine the cause of my check engine light. In today's computer-controlled world, this product is great for letting you know if that trouble light is a serious problem or a small nuisance.

This recently saved me cancelling a planned vacation as I was able to pull the code and determine that the problem was a minor one that wouldn't prevent us from continuing on our trip. It is also great for keeping the mechanics honest. If you already know what codes are in the computer you'll also know if they try to pull a fast one on you and sell you repairs you don't need!!

If you're a pro, you probably aren't reading this review anyway, but this may not be the product for you. But if you are a shade-tree mechanic, or even if you don't know how to turn a wrench, this is a great value for a product that will give you the information you need.

I have owned this tool now for about 5 years and I have had no problems. I've used several times to read codes and reset OBD2 equipped vehicles. Nice also to be able to use the web-site to get further diagnostics and repair information at a nominal fee. Would have been nice if the cord was at least twice as long; but not a big issue.

I have had this item for quite some time. It works great with an 02 madza millenia and an 06 nissan xterra. I have had check engine lights come on with both of them. This unit easily reads the codes and will reset the light. This unit pays for itself the first time you use it. Most dealerships will charge about $100 each time they "diagnose" a check engine light (aka, plug in thier similar unit).

My old Chevy pickup (check engine light) comes on from time to time. I went to the mechanic who was going to charge me just to turn off the light. I went to Autozone and they clerk hooked his up and read it. His unit gave the wrong information; he said remove the gas cap might be loose. I asked if he could turn off the light, to which he stated "we can't do that". I went online and saw then ordered this unit. I hooked it up and out went the light. I used it check my other vehicle also. I have 5 vehicles total, this gets expensive after while so I will be ready for the next light. Great tool! Highly recommended.

My dodge ram 2500 check engine light had been on for a long, long time. My local muffler guy said it was probably the cat converter and he would fix me up for $300, the dealer wanted $1000. Now that seemed like a bargain but it was still a big chunk of change so I decided to look for a cheap code reader, I found the Actron CP9125 on Amazon and it had great reviews, it was also cheap enough so I went for it! I was hoping I could figure this thing out (not having a clue as to what to expect), I quickly read the directions, (just a novice at car stuff) then I plugged it in and voila, it showed codes P0440 and P0442....an evaporator emissions malfunction/small leak. With help from my pal I locate the evaporator cannister or whatever it's called under the truck and discovered a hose was cracked on one end and not connected on the other end! I run to my local autozone and pick up a foot of hose and 2 new clamps for about $4.50, button it all up, run the scanner to clear codes and I'm all done! Now I'm just your regular car owner who does the general basic maintenance (brakes, tune-ups, oil, bulbs, etc.) far from a pro. Had I let the muffler man do his thing my code would still be on and I'd be out $300! Needles to say, but if you use this scanner just 1 time you will be way ahead of the game! In a nutshell this unit worked perfectly for my needs and my pal had an issue with his 96 corolla and we got his problem fixed (egr vac line). By the way, the booklet that it comes with has all the codes and a lot of info and if you need more input you can google your particular code and you will find a fix-it flow chart or probable cause, it shouldn't be too difficult to pinpoint your issues. I highly recommend this reader!

I ordered this code reader about a week ago with free shipping. TOTALLY WORTH IT! I received it today and i went straight to work. No batteries necessary. Just briefly read the four or five step manual on using it to either scan, or scan and erase. Instructions are very clear and concise. Simply plug it in, press a button and get your code(s). I had my engine light on and it ran 4 codes when i plugged it in. I wrote them down and with the included hard copy I referenced the codes that i got. My MAF, TPS, and air temp sensor were all throwing codes. I understand this b/c i am currently working on a new cold air intake. What I didn't know however was that i was miss-firing every so often in my fifth cylinder. The code read a number and the title of the code was literally "Cylinder 5 miss-fire." I will change the wires and plug tomorrow afternoon. I am seriously satisfied with this product and the convenience it has introduced to me. HIGHLY RECOMMEND TO ANYONE with a car made after 1996. Home mechanic or not it's good to know whats wrong with your car BEFORE being bent over my a real mechanic who is going to charge you an arm and a leg for checking everything. Know what the problem is before u get there and save yourself the money/trouble.

I just got my Actron scanner in the mail. I did read a good portion of the reviews before I bought it, but was still concerned about actually learning how to use it. Well I am happy to say my fears were not warranted. It was as simple as plugging it in under the dash (35 seconds) Starting the car (3 seconds) and hitting a couple of buttons(1 minute). It spit out a code. I looked it up on my cell on the internet and I immediately knew what why my check engine light came on! In total it saved me the time to go to the dealership, the cost $75 to diagnose the problem there, and the needless worry the accompanies the damn check engine light..the unknown.. I love this machine.."sniff sniff" :-)

I bought an 11 year old sports car that runs beautifully. The only problem -- the check engine light would come on. I took the car to my local mechanic, who read the codes and told me nothing serious. Long story short after 4 separate trips to attempt to repair the minor item tripping the light, I finally gave up. I bought the pocketscanner -- now on the occasion that the check engine light comes on (about once every few hundred miles) I check the codes myself -- if they are the same minor ones, I clear them. The scanner is easy to use and takes less than a minute to read and clear. For $50 bucks I no longer need to go to the mechanic and I don't have to look at a check engine light or worry about trying to find a "ghost" problem (kinked wire, etc.) that is tripping the light. Excellent product for the money.

I am very pleased with this simple to use code reader. This reader may not have all the frills, but it does not have the high price tag either. I only use this occasionally and it works great. It comes with software for looking up the descriptions of the codes. It is a very rugged little unit. Very solid with good heavy duty connector and cable. My only comtplaint is that it is only powered while connected to the car. It would be nice if it had an internal battery to remember the last codes read out. I have to write the codes down to bring them to my computer. But hey, there is the attraction of a quality unit and low price again.

I saw this box on a tool show on cable television a while back, and decided to buy one. After one use, I had diagnosed two error codes in my car and purchased the parts to correct the problem. Since the parts were screwdriver installations, I did the work myself. The car ran better and I saved a bunch of money. I like my local car dealer, but at $76.00 per hour of labor, including diagnostics, I probably saved over $150.00 the first time I used this code reader, more than paying the price of the unit. It attaches simply and the codes are available in many sources, such as commercially available manuals, for reference.

Product does just what it says. Read the codes for your check engine light. The included CD only gives information for car models up to 2003, but that doesn't matter since I found everything online. Then searched onlince for solutions to the problems. I followed online recommendations, reset the computer on the car and everything has been fine.

I know very little about cars so having this around to know what's going on with the check engine light is great! I at least know where to start when trying to get my car repaired. I love how it's so straight forward and doesn't have a confusing menu. You just plug in and sure enough it spits the codes out.

I had just spent a grueling couple of cycles with mechanic shops trying to get my car smog tested for registration.
The smog shop just told me that I didn't pass, and without anything more than a cryptic bit of description, took my $25.
I then went to a service shop where I waited for nearly two hours for them to perform the diagnostic, toss in a cryptic bit of description, assure me that I was fine and collect $50.
Wash, rinse and repeat.
Frustrated, and having spent $150 already and gotten nowhere and knowing nothing, I went online and did a bit of research and chose to purchase the Actron CP9125 PocketScan Code Reader. It arrive a couple of days later and within minutes of opening it I was able to read my engine codes, reset them and find out which ones were actual problems.

I was a little skeptic about this Code Reader but it proved me wrong. I mean it may not be the best or most advanced but it solved my problem. Very easy to use, simple, portable and it finds the codes very quick. Can't go wrong with the price. It feels good to be even if one step ahead of the car mechanics.

Product works just as advertised. It helped me find the problem with my automobile and allow me to fix & verify the fix myself without incurring expensive mechanics shop time. I did not use the CD, because I already had the Shop Manual for my car which included the error & status code lists.

Remember to follow the instructions...Turn Key OFF, Connect the code reader, Turn key ON to read codes. Turn key OFF before disconnecting code reader.

Problem found and fixed included bad #1 O-2 sensor and leaking EGR valve. Sensor was replaced ($16.95 via on-line ordering). The EGR valve was cleaned & re-installed. The EGR valve was causing abnormally high idle speed, and the bad sensor was allowing the computer to mal-adjust fuel mixtures versus ignition timing.

These repairs allowed me to get back to 37 MPG (highway) with my Saturn. Typical of GM to discontinue producing one of the few cars that will actually get very good mileage. Must be an Obama thing...if it works, 'change' it! He said he wanted 'change'...I just didn't realize that he wanted 'my change'!

Just got this and have used it once. It did what it was supposed to do. Found the reason my vehicle's check engine light was on. (The right front O2 sensor was malfunctioning.) I replaced the sensor, erased the error code using this reader, and now all is well.

Would be handy if it actually told you what it finds in plain English like the one that Costco sells. Also, it would be nice to have a longer cord and a backlight on the LCD display.

Having said that, it's well worth the $50 paid to Amazon.com and I recommend it to other automotive do-it-yourself-ers.

It is simple to get the error codes with this scanner. Then Google OBDII code ###### to find out what the cause is. The scanner easily resets the code and turns off the check engine light.

This scanner will pay for itself if it saves one trip to the repair shop. The most common reason for check engine lights on recent model cars is a loose gas cap. I have used this scanner on a number of people's cars. A couple did not tighten the gas cap properly. Always turn it till it clicks three times. A couple had problems but were able to research the cause and solution before going to the repair shop.

This has been a good investment.

The code reader was simple to use and gave me an instant readout of the fault. After replacing a defective thermosatat I used the scanner to clear the "Check Engine" light, an operation that the garage would have charged $45 to perform. I am totally satisfied with this product and would recommend it to anyone.

I bought this to help find the problem on a truck a few years ago. It's been a great addition to my toolbox and I've used it many times. Easy to use, and a great value for money. Sure a $200 scanner would have a lot more features, but I paid 39.99 and for that price it's paid for itself many times over. If you're a shade tree mechanic like me, and don't want to spend for the high end scanner, you cant beat this one. Also, it's rugged. Dropped a few times and shows no sign of wear and still works great.

This reader worked for me as advertized. In less than 20 seconds it gave me the three error codes. Now I know that my O2 sensor is up for replacement. I am planning replace it myself which should save me hundrends of $$$ vs the dealership.
I like that no battery is required to power the reader (unlike those more expensive readers).

Some minor issues I had:
The buttons on this unit are not very well designed. Read and Erase keys double as Down and Up which works OK, but is not intuitive (there isn't an Up arrow on the right button). What is worse, the buttons get stuck sometimes. The screen is very small and I needed to consult the manual to interpret the abbreviated displayed there.
And "there is lead in the cord" label is ridiculous. Well, at least we were warned :)

I ordered the scanner when I started to get a persistent engine light on my Jeep Grand Cherokee. On receiving the unit promptly after my order, I hooked it up, read the code, bought and installed a new throttle position sensor and the light has been out ever since. This was well worth the investment.

I recently bought the Actron CP9125 pocketscan code reader to help diagnose some recurring issues with my car, a 2003 VW Passat sedan with a 1.8L 4 cyl engine. I'd had some issues with the engine running rough, check engine light coming on, etc. I bought the reader, read the instructions (which were very simple and straightforward), and plugged it in under the dash. After a brief time with the engine idling roughly, the code reader provided two codes, one indicating I had a problem with the no. 3 cylinder misfiring, and with an oxygen sensor. By switching the plug-in ignition coil on the no. 3 cylinder to the no. 4 cylinder, then checking the reading again and noting it now showed a misfire in the no. 4 cylinder I was able to determine the ignition coil was malfunctioning. I went to my local foreign parts store, bought the coil for $48, and plugged it in...problem solved, no trouble codes anymore. Last time this happened, I didn't have a code reader and took it to a repair shop I'd been using. $357 dollars later I'd gotten my car back with 4 new ignition coils and 4 new spark plugs and wires. Buying the coil myself and plugging it in for $48 was a HUGE improvement, and EASY. Great product, and very valuable for helping you know what's REALLY wrong with your car when you take it in for service!

My car has 115,000 miles on it and runs fine but I needed to smog it and my check engine light was on thus preventing it from passing a smog check. Due to the age of the car, I just want to avoid the service shop. So I ordered the Acutron CP9125 to see what the problem was and to reset the light. Well, I got three error codes. After researching each code obd-codes.com/ I determined that the problems did not warrant any further attention. I reset the system, the check engine light is off and I am ready to smog it. If the light comes back on, I will do a little more research. Plus, I can use this in the future whenever that light comes on. Saves time because you don't have to bring your car into a shop. Saves money, because you don't have to pay someone to tell you what is wrong or not wrong. The unit just paid for itself after one use. I have been wanting something like this for years. THANKS!

My engine light came on after 40,000 miles.I spent several hundred dollars having it looked at,to no avail.This product works great.It not only tells you whats wrong,but you can also put the light out.You need a computer to download their softwear,but it does work.

For a code basic scanner, it works perfect for us non-mechanics. It scans for the code and you compare it to the booklet. You have to research a little on what the code means for example "P0455 - EVAP Emission Control System Leak - Large". You can enter that code into "Google.com" search or "obd-codes.com" and it gives you the problem and possible solutions. It ended up my wife did not tightened the gas cap. Problem fixed and cleared the code to turn off the Check Engine Light.

A diagnostic test costs around $85 at a shop just to run the machine to check the code, but at least with this you can scan it yourself and keep the machine if you ever need it again. You save 20 bucks and get a new toy.

The Actron CP9125 works exactly as advertised. It's a no-frills, basic tool for reading and erasing OBD (on-board diagnostic) codes. Using this tool can save you money by knowing in advance exactly what's wrong with your car. You can get the right parts and fix it yourself or at least let your mechanic know that you know what's wrong, so you won't be taken advantage of.

I used mine to diagnose a faulty right-side, front oxygen sensor heater on my Audi A4 with V-6 engine. I replaced the sensor myself and saved >$700.00 vs. what my local dealer wanted to charge for the job.

It's small and rugged. I keep mine in my car in case I have any roadside trouble.

Surprisingly it worked great! I have a 2005 Buick LeSabre (no old people jokes please), it plugged right into the socket underneath the steering wheel and gave me the code which resulted in the MAF sensor needed to be replaced.

If you like working on cars as a hobby or would rather fix items on your own car yourself, then I would say this is a must if you want to fix your car when that pesky "check engine light" or "service engine soon" light comes on.

I bought this and have used it numerous times to pull numerous codes on numerous cars. Afterward, I Google the code with the car make/model and find people who have pulled the same codes and how they fixed them. This has not failed me yet in diagnosing problems correctly. This is a great product for reading codes and diagnosing problems, as well as erasing codes to see if you actually fixed your problem.

Highly Recommended for any car guy/gal.

This is a good code reader that is much less expensive purchased through Amazon than you could find and buy at local auto parts retail stores. Match this up with an appropriate auto repair manual and you can diagnose and fix many of the issues that cause your "Check Engine" light to go on. Not only will this scanner display the underlying codes that cause the "Check Engine" light to go on, but it can delete them from your car's onboard computer, and shut that pesky light off. Just do that after you repair the causes.

There are codes that ultimately require you to perform higher level testing and use more expensive tooling than the average handyman can be expected to own, but I just look at those as great flags to take my vehicle to a repair shop rather than attempt the dx rx on my own.

Never regretted this purchase at all.
